Mental Fatigue: Learning to Pause and Breathe
Some days feel heavier than others. Not because something specific happened, but because your mind decides to carry the weight of everything it has ever felt, seen, or imagined.
Me: “Why do I feel so tired today?”
Mind: “You’re carrying so much, you know. All the worries, all the to-dos, all the things you haven’t done yet.”
Me: “But I haven’t really done anything today. Just been sitting, trying to work through it.”
Mind: “Exactly. You think resting is the solution, but I need to sort through everything—past, present, future. I never stop, you know?”
Me: “I get it. But isn’t it okay to just… pause sometimes? To breathe and let go?”
Mind: “It feels like I can’t. There’s always something. If I stop, everything will pile up, and I’ll fall behind.”
Me: “But you’re already overwhelmed. Maybe it’s time to let go of the constant need to be productive. Even for a moment.”
Mind: “I don’t know how. I’ve been running this race for so long. What happens if I stop?”
Me: “You rest. You breathe. You remember that you are not defined by how much you do. You are allowed to be still.”
Mind: “And what about all the things I still need to do? What if I forget something important?”
Me: “Maybe the most important thing right now is you. Your well-being. Everything else can wait.”
Mind: “I suppose you’re right. Maybe I can take a break. Just for a little while.”
We live in a society that celebrates busyness and productivity. The pressure to excel, to be on top of everything—career, relationships, societal expectations—can silently take a toll on our mental well-being. And when we don’t meet these expectations, we start questioning ourselves: Am I doing enough? Why can’t I handle things better?
It’s okay to admit that you’re tired, even when you can’t point out exactly why. You’re human. Your mind needs rest, just as your body does.
If you feel mentally drained today, remind yourself:
•Pause: Take a moment to breathe. It’s okay to step away.
•Reflect: What’s making your mind feel heavy? Write it down or talk about it.
•Heal: Allow yourself some kindness—a walk, a nap, a comforting book, or just sitting in silence.
Remember, it’s okay to feel tired. It’s okay to prioritize your mental health. The world can wait while you take care of yourself.
Take a deep breath, dear reader. Let go of the need to carry everything all at once.
